Can we auto-purge outdated or no longer in use Form I-9s?

Yes! WorkBright's member services team will be able to help you set up auto purge for your outdated or no longer in use Form I-9s.

Why would you use auto purge?

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires employers to keep Form I-9 records only for a set period of time. Once those requirements are met, employers are expected to remove outdated records securely. WorkBright’s Purge Service helps your organization stay compliant and reduce risk by automatically deleting I-9s that are no longer legally required to be kept.

How it works.

Step 1: Mark Terminated Employees using one of the following options:

  • Option 1: Manually check the “Terminated” box on each employee's profile when they leave your company.

  • Option 2: Send WorkBright a monthly spreadsheet with employee termination dates, and we’ll bulk update the “Terminated” box for you.

  • Option 3: If you use an integration, you may be able to update the “Terminated” box automatically.

Step 2: Auto Purge:

WorkBright will permanently remove I-9s that meet USCIS retention rules:

  • 3 years after the employee’s start date -OR-

  • 1 year after their end date, whichever is later.

Note: Purges run daily at 8:00 PM MST, and once removed, records cannot be recovered.

What You’ll Need to Do.

  1. Confirm Employment Status

    1. Before each purge, update employee records to ensure end dates are accurate and termination status is applied correctly.

  2. Acknowledge Deletion

    1. By using this service, you acknowledge that once purged, records are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
